SafeSport - A Federally Mandated Child Safety Act

SafeSport is the program that went into effect in 2018 as a result of the Federal Government's "Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and SafeSport Authorization Act of 2017." Reporting suspected or known child abuse is Federally Mandated.

Beginning immediately, Little League International and all local Little League programs must adhere to the following requirements from the SafeSport Act:

1- Reporting of Child Abuse, including sexual abuse involving a minor, to the proper authorities. Contact one of your state/county/local law enforcement agencies or Child Services Department within 24 hours.

• All volunteers of a local league are now mandated reporters and could face criminal charges if the league chooses to ignore, or not report to the proper authorities, any reason to suspect an act of child abuse, including sexual abuse, within 24 hours.
• Local leagues must be aware of the proper procedures to report sexual abuse in their state. Please reference LittleLeague.org/ChildAbuse

2- Leagues must adopt a policy that prohibits retaliation on "good faith" reports of child abuse.

3- Leagues must adopt a policy that limits one-one-one contact with minors.

4- Leagues are highly encouraged to complete the Abuse Awareness training provided by USA Baseball and SafeSport.

2019 Rules and Regulations Update

Little League International has officially announced the rule and regulation changes that will take effect in 2019.

The two most notable changes will take place in the International Tournament:

  • New tiebreaker structure in all divisions
  • New regulation establishing the number of adults in the dugout or on the field play when a tournament team has 11 or fewer eligible players

To read the full explanation and to view the additional changes, see rule and regulation changes, 2019.

My Outburst Embarrassed Everyone

I was all fired up as I sat in the third-base bleachers behind our dugout. I didn't think the opposing manager was playing fair. My son's manager would give signs to the catcher, who would then relay what pitch to throw. The opposing manager would then yell a comment to the hitter. When our manager called a fastball, the other manager would yell "quick bat." When a change-up was called, he'd yell "keep your weight back." I watched it all game, and complained to a few other parents. They didn't seem to believe me or care. One father pointed out that manager was yelling other things like "nothing high," "protect the plate," "wait for your pitch." It didn't matter. I was convinced he was stealing signs.

In the fourth inning, their pitcher hit two straight batters. My son was up next. A fastball nicked his elbow. The opposing manager called time, and walked to the mound. When he didn't make a pitching change, I yelled, "He has to come out! That's the rule!" My wife told me to be quiet. "That's the rule!" I yelled again. The manager looked over at me before he went in the dugout. Our manager was coaching third base. He turned around, and said, "John, it's not a rule. Relax."
